WHAT:
Mapping the Past and Present – Howard Mathieson and Arwen Newman
Howard will be presenting: “Bringing your ancestors “alive” in Google Earth:”
The presentation will illustrate the process whereby historic map overlays can be imported, “geo-coded” and viewed in Google Earth. “Map My Ancestors” will be introduced and then used to import family or one name files into Google Earth. This process will enable data to be viewed in an appropriate historical context.
Arwen will focus on how to use topographic maps to locate rural cemeteries. We will use the Geographic Names Information System to locate both current and historic places and features in order to cast our nets. Once cemeteries have been located, we will use the lat/long coordinates to view the site in Google Maps and obtain driving directions.
